How To Stay Calm When Life Is Chaotic

How to stay calm when life is chaotic? Have you been constantly asking yourself this question lately? I know I have!

Lately, I have been quite overwhelmed with the many changes coming my way. Like preparing to move to Nova Scotia. Seal the sale of our home and purchase another! While staying consistent with blogging and being present with my kids.

So for the next few weeks, this is my new mantra – “ I’m completely open to the magnificent life transformations coming my way.”

There’s just something about reminding ourselves to embrace and focus on the positive and bliss instead of the chaos. Do you agree with me?

I strongly believe that there’s nothing wrong with having a chaotic life. It only gets messier when we allow it to. When we become overwhelmed we act irrational and make not-so-smart decisions in life. Decisions that go against us in the future. The kinds we later wished we had not committed to. Sounds familiar?

How To Stay Calm When Life Is Chaotic

Staying calm and peaceful when life gets tough is not always easy!

It takes courage, patience, forgiveness, and commitment. Staying grounded when life is chaotic will assist you in not having regrets in the future. So how do you stay calm when life is chaotic? Here are 12 ways I use to stay calm when life is chaotic and so can you too!

A square box with the captions 12 ways I use to stay calm when life is chaotic and you can too!

1. Do not give in to temptation

When life gets tough, and our world seems like it’s falling apart, what’s the first thing we do? We give in to our frustration, act out, or rebel.

After all, how is it possible for anyone to stay calm when life becomes messy?

Not giving in to temptation can be difficult, but it can also save you from so much heartache and pain later down the road.

Whenever you are faced with a crisis and your emotions are bubbling up. Acknowledge these emotions by asking yourself – how am I feeling right now? Why am I feeling this way?

My friend, it’s okay to admit when you are angry, fearful, lonely… Take a deep breath into these feelings and as you exhale release all your emotions. Letting go, a sigh as you release these emotions.

Too often when we are angry we act in haste, doing things we normally wouldn’t have, had we not been experiencing these emotions. The first step to staying calm when life is chaotic – is to not let our emotions get the better of us. Keep your emotions intact.

2. Stay calm through acceptance

Unfortunately, some crises do not tell us when it’s coming. And many times we are unprepared because these crises were not invited into our lives.

Choosing to accept these crises and being willing to work through them will help you to navigate this unexpected chaos when they show up. Instead of getting all worked up and anxious about what you are going through. Begin looking for a solution to the chaos surrounding you. How can you create something good out of this mishap? What lessons can you be taught through this crisis? How can you go through this tough time and come out better on the other side?

Whenever we focus on the positive side of things instead of the negative side we will attract fabulous things into our lives. It may not happen right away, but in time it will.

3. Faith will support you in staying calm when life is chaotic

When life becomes chaotic we eventually lose faith. And, when we lose faith and stop believing, our energy becomes so heavy that we begin to feel lost and confused. We no longer see the light but only the darkness that surrounds us.

I agree! It’s absolutely difficult to have faith when your world is falling apart. There are so many unknowns. You are feeling terrified and confuse. But having faith and believing that the storm will soon pass will be your biggest supporter throughout these rough times.

Do not give up and lose faith. Trust the process and believe in the highest good.

4. Practicing self-compassion will keep you grounded when life is chaotic

A picture of a bay with Norm Kelly's quote - You can't pour from an empty cup.

Do you treat yourself the same way you treat others when you are faced with a crisis? Are you as compassionate with yourself, the same way you’re compassionate towards your loved ones when they are facing difficult times?

Chances are you just answered no to both questions. If you said – yes. That’s amazing!

Too often, as women, we beat ourselves up. Either for not being present with our kids. Not being able to maintain a clean home. Not being able to stay as connected to our friends and families as much as we would love to. Unable to contribute financially to your growing family’s expenses and so forth.

As moms and women, we need to ensure that our cups are always full. Because we can’t pour from an empty cup. To serve others and show up and be the best and healthiest version of ourselves, we have to take care of ourselves. We must be compassionate to ourselves. And when we can forgive and completely love and respect ourselves, we will fall in alignment with ease.

You can’t pour from an empty cup. Norm Kelly.

5. Pray is so important when your life is in chaos

Sometimes praying is the only thing that can get us through the chaos in our lives.

Turn to pray and ask for guidance and support through these tough times you are facing. Trust that your prays will be received and answered. Have patience and keep faithful.

6. Mindfulness will help you to stay calm in the midst of chaos

Being mindful is about being present in the now. Letting go of the past and not worrying about the future. The easiest way to practice mindfulness and stay grounded is through breathing. Breathing helps us to reduce stress in our bodies while staying calm.

Cultivating mindfulness takes time and it needs to be done consistently. You can do this breathing exercise anytime throughout your day. Breathe in for a count of two and exhale for a count of four (repeat three times). Then, breathe in for a count of three and exhale for a count of six (repeat three times). Now, breathe in for a count of four, hold at the top for a few seconds, then exhale for a count of eight (repeat three times).

7. Be inspired

Whenever I’m feeling gloomy, stressed or something crazy is happening in my life. I always turn to some form of inspiration as a – “picked me up,” and it never fails.

After listening to a great podcast or ted talk I feel rejuvenated, stronger, and wiser than I was minutes before. It’s such an easy and quick way to take your mind off some of the chaos happening around you at the moment. You will feel empowered and enlighten, and who knows – maybe you will find answers that you needed to help you through your crisis from these talks.

Here are some of my favorite podcasts:

8. Pause and think before reacting

When life throws us a storm, it’s quite easy for us to get overwhelmed. We act in the moment and many times we can overreact. We say and do things that we may later regret or may not have done had we been in a different situation.

Whenever face with stress and chaos, pause for a few minutes and think through the situation before responding.

Here’s an epic example.

You are overworked, burned out, and tired. You are hustling to prepare dinner when your tween daughter is upset that she’s unable to find something that she desperately needs. Your first instinct may be to yell at her ( which can easily escalate into a lot of chaos). Instead of acting in a haste. Walk away from her, maybe go outside and take a few deep breaths, then come back and have a calm and civil conversation with her.

9. Visualization and manifestation

A simple and effective activity to help you feel grounded and stay calm is visualization. Visualize yourself and your life exactly the way you want it to be without guilt and judgment. Wear the biggest and most joyous smile on your face as you visualize your dream life. And walk into ease being that version of you and embrace it wholeheartedly. Knowing that you can be everything you are. The skies are your limits and anything is possible. Because it really is.

10. Meditation

Meditation is a big part of my life. I use it every day and will continue to do so because meditation has completely changed my life and can change yours too.

Meditation that involves mindfulness brings awareness to the now and connects you with the present. You do not need to go to the top of the mountains to meditate. You can sit comfortably on the ground with your legs crossed and eyes closed and being with the breathing exercise I shared with you in point 6. Then simply bring awareness to your five senses. What do you hear, feel, smell, touch, and taste? Meditating for 15 minutes a day will help you to stay grounded and live a peaceful life.

11. Gratification

Gratification helps us to appreciate life. It reminds us how fortunate and blessed we are. This is exactly what we need to be reminded of when things are not going the way we expect them to because it will help us to fall in alignment and feel abundant rather than focus on the chaos we are temporarily experiencing,

You can express gratification in several ways. One of the easiest ways is to express gratification as soon as you wake in the morning. Be grateful for being blessed with another day of life. The people in your life. The sunshine, the rainfall, being able to hear the birds whistling, the leaves rustling, and the many beauties we are blessed with from nature.

You can also choose to express gratification through gratitude journaling. All you really got to do, is list three (or as many) things you are grateful for with the last 24 – 48 hours. It can be as simple as being grateful that your spouse did the dishes for you or as magnificent as standing up for yourself and pushing through your fears, so you can enjoy a less hectic and chaotic lifestyle.

12. Stay calm when life is chaotic by connecting with nature

Take some time for yourself by getting out and enjoying the beauty of nature. Spending time in nature is such a beautiful and inexpensive way to feel whole and revitalize.

Go for a walk in the park, your flower garden, smell the roses, and feel the softness of the flower petals against your fingers, walk bare feet on the lawn and allow yourself to be one with nature. Take a few deep breaths and truly enjoy the wonders of mother nature.

It’s quite easy to fall out of alignment when we are faced with chaos. When faced with this chaos, we are less aware of our truth. We become dismayed and lost. We are unable to show up and be the best version of ourselves. That’s why it’s imperative to stay grounded and calm when your life is in chaos.

When you choose to stay calm you will gain clarity on ways to overcome the chaos in your life, making it easier to tap into your creativity and benefit from the many inspired actions the universe will send your way.
